  FAQs

What is the difference between a castration and a spey?

A castration is the desexing procedure for a male animal whereas a spey is the desexing procedure for a female animal.  Speys are a more involved procedure, and are generally a little more expensive than castrations, due to the increased complexity of the operation, equipment needed and operating time.

Is a castration or a spey, an all day procedure?

Yes.  All desexing patients are admitted for a full day for monitoring.  We will normally ask the owners to bring their pet in between 8.30am and 10am.
Surgery is normally performed between mid-late morning and early afternoon.  We endeavour to keep the owners well informed on their pet's recovery after surgery.  Our new SMS system allows us to keep in contact with our clients at the best convienience.  Discharge time
is normally between 4.30pm and 6pm.  Full instructions for postoperative care will be provided for all surgical operations.

What days do you perform surgery?

We perform surgery Monday to Friday.  The drop off time is 8.30am till 10am the morning of the surgery (please allow 15 minutes to complete any necessary paperwork and to discuss any issues.)

Who will be performing the surgery?

Dr. Robert Payne is our principle veterinarian surgeon.
Kim Sheridan is our Head Veterinary Nurse who assists Dr. Robert throughout the surgery with preoperative preparation, anaesthetic monitoring and postoperative pain management.
Melanie Shaw and Libby Cuttriss, our two trainees, assist Kim when necessary.
